Globally, 180 million of these gadgets will be sold by the end of this year. Today, smartphones account for 14 percent of the sale of all mobile devices but that figure will go up to 37 percent by 2012, predicted research firm Gartner.
Consumers will plonk some $191 million these gadgets by 2012 - more than the $152 million they will spend on mobile PCs in the same period.
Handset makers are busy coming up with their own models too.
Motorola's Droid, its second model based on Google's Androids system, was shown at a media event in New York last week. Its partner Verizon Wireless said that it will promote the $199 phone, which goes on sale in the United States in two days, with its biggest marketing campaign ever.
HTC recently launched its Tattoo. Also Android-based, it is HTC's first model that lets you personalise things both inside and out. For instance, someone who like to chat, text and tweet can put all these widgets on the main screen.
Given the slump in PC sales, almost all PC makers form Acer and Dell to Lenovo are coming up with smartphones. Also, because telcos are the experts in selling these phones, expect more tie-ups between PC makers and telcos over the next three years. As the smart phone - a personal gadget - becomes more and more the tool of choice for employees on the go, the individual and not the IT manager call the shots in buying these devices for corporate use.
